Walt Steenbergen President Walt’s Interest in healthcare started when his first son was born with Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF), a very complicated incurable genetic condition with zero treatments at the time. His quest to find out about the condition led him to dive deeply and passionately into the world of healthcare. Realizing that having a child with a rare disease is a special category, it led him to start and Co-Chair the local chapter of The Children’s Tumor Foundation along with his wife, Sam. This organization supports other parents and adults with NF, and advocates for treatments, including the FDA approval for the FIRST treatment for plexiform neurofibrmoas, one of the complications of NF. He is very active in politics and has gone to DC to lobby for NIH funding, and ultimately founded a parent advocacy organization which has brought legislation to reform special education for disabled children. He is also a licensed USCG Master Mariner with experience captaining cruise ships, tugboats, and myriads of other vessels around the world. He also serves on the board of Adopt-A-Dog, helping homeless dogs find homes.
